Boondocking in Arizona near Quartzsite and the Desert Bar

The Desert Bar near Parker, AZ is one of the more unusual desert places I visited. I was with a boondocking group when a woman said I should come along as she and her son and some others were going to a bar where there was dancing. I assumed we were going into town.

We drove up the highway then turned off on an unmarked dirt road. We drove for several miles with nothing in sight but rocks and a few bushes. It was just us, no others. Ever the optimist I started thinking maybe this was a mother son serial killer team and I would never be seen again.

As luck would have it they were not a mother son serial killer team but actually were driving to a bar where there was dancing.

The Desert Bar, as you can see from the arial I shot from a helicoptr is out in the middle of nowhere. But with that the bar has two stages and dance floors, a bar of course and a light cafe.

It’s all run on solar power. They close at 6pm because they start to lose the solar and in any event you really don’t want to be driving out of there in the dark.

Quartzsite
Every January the population of Quartzsite grows from about 3,300 to a few hundred thousand RV people there to attend the annual RV show. RV dealers set up lots and under the Big Tent one can find just about anything RV oriented and many things, “it slices and it dices”, that are not RV oriented.

There are many RV parks but most RVs park on BLM land, either 14 day free parking or BLM Long Term Visiter Areas where you pay $40 for 2 weeks or $180 for 5 months. The LTVA has dump, water and trash. During the show the LTVA also tends to be less crowded. People spend $200K for a motorhome but won’t spend $5/day to park it.

There are groups (Escapee Solos, WINs, Escapee Singles and dozens of others who have spots they return to every year.

The occasional desert rains are good because they keep the dust down, clean the rocks and create nice rainbows.

Although the big attraction is the RV show there are lots of activities. Groups will host ice cream, desert golf, snacks or a dance.
